ROCK SALT VS WHITE SALT FOR COMMERCIAL GRITTING

Understanding two common de-icing salt options.

Rock salt and white de-icing salt are both used for winter maintenance. The appropriate choice depends on the site, surface, appearance requirements and the treatment specification.

What is brown rock salt?

Traditional rock salt contains natural mineral impurities that give it a brown or reddish appearance. It is widely used for roads, yards and commercial hardstanding.

What is white salt?

White de-icing salt is more refined and leaves less visible mineral residue. This can make it attractive for entrances, pedestrian areas and locations where cleanliness or appearance is a particular consideration.

Which should a commercial site use?

There is no universal answer. Surface type, site priorities, storage, spreading equipment and the agreed winter maintenance specification should all be considered. Salt should also be applied appropriately rather than assuming that more product automatically means better treatment.
